There are two stunning waterfalls on the Wannon River, west of Hamilton in the Southern Grampians Shire of Victoria's Western District. The famous Swiss-born artist Abraham-Louis Buvelot painted the Wannon Falls in 1872. In his masterpiece, there is a deluge of water in comparison to the modest fall I saw in early May 2021. Not far away are the lesser known, but equally spectacular, Nigretta Falls. While the falls are a mere trickle,the surrounding rock formations display every colour of the rainbow. An artist's delight. Furthermore, while the famous Wannon Falls can be viewed from a metal deck jutting out over the deep abyss, one can descend to the base of the Nigretta Falls via a long wooden staircase. Both waterfalls flow from a small river with a rocky bed into a huge chasm filled with enormous boulders and a small lake. What geological event shaped this otherwise flat landscape?
Some of my friends wonder why I have changed my name from David to Dai. The short answer is that I haven’t. My parents, sisters and immediate family always used Dai (but pronounced “day”) as a short form of David — a nickname if you like. However, it appears that the Welsh adopted the name "Dai” (pronounced “die”) as a short form of Dafydd (pronounced “Dahveth”) the patron saint of Wales and also known as St David just across Offa’s Dyke. Why Wales? Well the name “Wynn” means fair-skinned or white in the Welsh language and my ancestors were certainly from around those parts (others were from Ireland and Cornwall, but paid full fare to sail to Australia.
